What COSMOS Natural Certification Really Means

— and Why It Matters

“Natural” should mean something you can trust — not just a nice label.

In the beauty world, natural is one of the most overused (and misunderstood) words. It shows up on everything from moisturisers to makeup wipes, but without regulation, it can mean… well, almost anything. One brand’s definition of “natural” might include plant extracts and essential oils. Another’s might include petrochemicals and a dash of aloe vera.

At Salt of the Earth, we knew from day one that wasn’t good enough. If we were going to call our products natural, we wanted that claim to be verifiable — not just a marketing buzzword.

That’s Where COSMOS Natural Comes In

COSMOS is one of the world’s most respected standards for natural and organic cosmetics. It was developed by a group of leading certification bodies (including Soil Association, BDIH, Ecocert, and others) to bring consistency, rigour, and transparency to an industry often clouded by greenwashing.

Our sprays, roll-ons, deo sticks and balms are all COSMOS Natural certified. That means they’ve been independently audited and approved according to a tough set of standards, covering:

  • 🌱 Ingredient sourcing: Prioritising natural, renewable, and sustainable materials

  • 🚫 No synthetic fragrances or colourants: COSMOS bans many of the chemicals typically used in conventional deodorants

  • 🔍 Full transparency: All ingredients must be clearly declared, with no sneaky marketing spin

  • 🧪 Manufacturing standards: Including environmental management, cleaning processes, and contamination prevention

  • ♻️ Packaging criteria: Designed to minimise environmental impact

Each product is reviewed annually, and certification isn’t automatic — we have to prove compliance every time.

What About Our Crystal Range?

We love an honest chat, so here’s the full story: our Crystal deodorants are not COSMOS certified.

Why? COSMOS focuses on formulated cosmetic products, and our Crystal range is made from a single natural mineral — potassium alum. While it doesn’t fall under COSMOS certification criteria, it’s still fully aligned with our ethos: natural, minimal, and free from synthetic additives.

We don’t want to blur the lines or pretend all our products are certified when they’re not. Instead, we’re upfront — because trust is built on honesty, not hype.

Why This Matters to You

Whether you’re choosing a deodorant for your health, your ethics, or the environment, COSMOS certification offers peace of mind. It means we’ve put in the work behind the scenes — so you don’t have to decode ingredient lists or cross-reference claims.

We’re proud to meet a standard that reflects the care we put into every bottle, refill, and formula.  Find out about all our certification on our certifications page.
